Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of sputum cytology for the early detection of hypopharyngeal carcinoma, we analyzed cytological findings of sputum from hypopharyngeal carcinoma patients detected by mass screening sputum cytology.
Study Design: We analyzed sputum samples collected from eight patients detected and diagnosed with hypopharyngeal carcinoma from among 110, 237 participants in mass screening sputum cytology.
Results: Three of the 8 (37.5%) were stage one hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Number of atypicl squamous cells including malignant cells in the specimen were small in stage one cases compared to stage three or four. Atypical squamous cells with basophilic or eosinophilic cytoplasm were relatively frequent in most cases and the number of degenerated atypical squamous cells did not increase with stage progression.
Conclusion: Sputum cytology is effective in detecting earlystage hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Enough epithelial cells must be collected from sputum specimens and their screening must be careful to detect early-stage lesions.
