Objective: To clarify the cytological appearance of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILD), the imprint cytologic specimens of 10 AILD cases were investigated.
Study design: Imprints for cytologic examination were prepared from fresh surgical specimens and were staind by Papanicolaou and May-Grtinwald-Giemsa stain. Results: The cytological findings were summarized as follows:(1) Medium sized lymphocytes with twisted nuclei usually occupied approximately 40% of the cellular composition.(2) Clear cells were observed in all 10 cases.Among them, multiple small clusters or large islands of clear cells were observed in 7 cases, whereas a few clear cells were present in the remainingthree.(3) Plasma cells and their precursors including immunoblasts were observed in every case.(4) Various numbers of reactive cells such as neutrophils, eosinophils, histiocytes and epithelioid cells were observed.(5) The absence of tingible body macrophages seems to be related to the disappearance of germinal centers.(6) A few lymphoid cells contained azurophilic granules.
Conclusion: The cytological features described above closely paralleled the histological patterns of AILD. Furthermore, the cytologic findings obtained from the present study support the use of fine-needle aspiration cytology, which is a relatively safe, simple and economical procedure for evaluation of lymph nodes.
