Background: Breast stromal sarcoma is a rare tumor, and there are only a few reports dealing with its cytology.
Case: A 64-year-old woman presented with a solid tumor of 18×16times;17 cm in size in the left breast. Histologically, the excised tumor was composed of spindleshaped cells arranged in bundles or in the striform pattern, and pleomorphic tumor cells with multinucleated giant cells which proliferated without any specific histologic pattern. Immunohistochemically tumor cells only stained positiver for vimentin. Histological diagnosis was a stromal sarcoma of the breast resembling malignant histiocytoma. The imprint cytology showed single or aggregated pleomorphic tumor cells with chromatin-rich nuclei and prominent nucleoli. Multinucleated tumor cells were also seen. These tumor cells did not show any epithelial characteristics.
Conclusion: We report the imprint cytology of a stromal sarcoma of the breast resembling malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
