We experienced a case of primary pure rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus without other mesenchymal and epithelial elements.
The patient was a 63-year-old woman who complained of lower abdominal pain and irregular genital bleeding. She underwent hystero-oophorectomy under the diagnosis of suspected uterine sarcoma.
The stamp specimen of the surgical material revealed spindle and racket-like shaped tumor cells with oval shaped nuclei and a few prominent nucleoli, and occasionally a striated structure observed in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. In histochemical study, the cytoplasm of tumor cells was positively stained with desmin, myoglobin and CPK-mm, and in electron microscopy, tumor cells were accompanied by actin and myosin myofilaments and myofibrils in the cytoplasm.
Other mesenchymal and epithelial elements were not observed in the surgical material. This tumor was diagnosed as pure rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus.
