A case of malignant lymphoma in thyroid was reported. A 68 year-old female had noticed a right neck tumor for one year and ultrasound guided aspiration cytology was performed. Cytological specimens showed many lymphocytes (small lymphocytes, lymphoblastes and large lymphoid cells) and a few thyroid follicular cells, suggestive of benign lymphoid hyperplasia.
A few months later, a right lobectomy of the thyroid was performed. A tumor was whitish-gray, noncapsulated solid mass, measuring 2.0 × 2.0cm in diameter. Touch smear specimens showed many medium sized lymphocytes mixed with small lymphocytes and others. Histologically tumor was composed of lymphoid tissue containing variable size of lymphoid follicles and coalescence of lymphoid follicles. From histological findings, many lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, follicular type, medium sized) was diagnosed.
On the cytologic examination of lymphoid tumor, it diagnosis must be careful.
