Characteristic features of poorly differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid, a variant of papillary and follicular carcinomas, were cytologically analized. Poorly differentiated carcinoma shows trabecular, solid and/or scirrhous patterns on histology, and is associated with a rather poor prognosis. As far as we know, any cytologic study on this type of carcinoma has not been reported.
In this paper, 12 cases of histologically confirmed poorly differentiated carcinoma were utilized. Specimens for cytology were obtained by fine needle aspiration, and Papanicolaou and Giemsa stains were applied. All the cases were cytologically positive for malignancy.
The intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions were found in 5 cases (42%). This value was lower than already reported ones of papillary carcinoma. Most of the cells of poorly differentiated carcinoma tended either to spread scatteredly or to form small sheet-like clusters. The large papillary clusters were exceptional. Therefore, it is concluded that both isolated cells and small clusterization were common features for poorl differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid.
