We have presented a case of alveolar soft part sarcoma orginating from the retroperitoneum with metastasis to the lungs and the brain. The patient was 27-year-old male, and the metastatic lesion of the brain was resected to improve his symptoms. Cytological study on the touch imprints of tumor mass was performed. In the touch smears, clusters of large polygonal cells with prominent nucleoli were observed. Some of tumor cells have rod-shaped inclusions in their cytoplasm. The unique histologic feature in this case was PAS-negative, rod-shaped inclusions and PAS-positive granules in the imprint smears. These structures were also found in the histologic preparations, although PAS-positive spikedshaped crystals characteristic to this neoplasm were only disclosed in histologic preparations but not in the imprints. We could not clarify the ultrastructural difference between the both structures described the above. Therefore, the rod-like inclusion in the cytological specimens might be essentially similar to the PAS-positive crystalline structure.<BR>Conclusively, to find the rod-like inclusion and PASpositivegranules is significant to diagnose this disease promply in cytology.
