Gastric endocrin cell carcinoma with a distinct psammomatous calcification found in a 61-year-old woman was cytologically and ultrastructurally studied.<BR>The tumor cells were clumped together in either tubular or acinar structures under Papanicolaou staining. Cytoplasme were lightly stained light green. Nuclei were either pseudocircular or oval, and were about 9μm in size, but some larger ones were also found. Nuclear chromatin was granular and increased. Nuclei often contained one or two small nucleoli. Most psammoma bodies were found within tumor cell aggregates. The bodies were stained lightly with hematoxylin and ranged from 1 to 50μm is size. There were many argyrophilic granules in cytoplasma with Grimelius stain. Numerous neurosecretory granules, 100-200nm in size, were also found in cytoplasm, ultrastructurally. Some of the tumor cells were found to be positive for α-Fetoprotein by immunoperoxdase method.
