Intracytoplasmic inclusion-bearing cells (ICIB cell) in the urine were cytomorphologically classified and studied in relation to clinical diagnosis of the patents.
Varieties of ICIB cells exhibited intermediate in spite of our morphological classification. Large numbers of ICIB cells in viral infection and very few ICIB cells in healthy cases showed no essential morphological findings attracted our attention as follows.
ICIB cells in acute cystitis were smaller than those of the rest of lesions.
High percentage of binucleated ICIB cells wese notice in cases of viral infection, while mono-nucleated ICIB cells were remarkable in acute cystitis.
ICIB cells in viral infection cases revealed the following relative cytomorphology; amorphous condensation of chromatin in nuclei surrounded by halo, grayish stained area or intermediate type, and only one inclusion body in ICIB cells.
Penta-or more nucleated cells were detected in mumps and measles, though they were not large in number.
The origin of inclusion-bearing cells is considered to be of multiple sources of macrophages, monocytes as well as epithelial cells. Further studies are required to elucidate those cells from the standpoint of immunecomplex treatment.
