Two cases of match-like cells found in aspiration cytological diagnosis of the gallbladder are reported.
The cells simulating a match in configuration were markedly elongated and the nuclei, also similary narrow and long. They were usually seen in clusters just like a fence or a crown. The cytoplasms and the nuclei showed finely granular degeneration. The gallbladder in these cases contained bilirubin-carbonate stones and brown-black colored, mucinous bile. Histologically, the gallbladder revealed mild inflammation and fibrosis in the propria mucosae. A few, long and degenerative cells were noted within the normal epithelial lining.
These degenerative cells within the epithelium may be exfoliated into the pathologic bile and degenerated to match-like cells.
