The cytologic features of 38 cases with endometrial cancer were examined in correlation with histopathological findings. Normal endometrial cells in cellular specimens collected from postmenopausal patients by cervical scraping, and tumor diathesis of all preparations were also examined.
1. With increase in dedifferentiation of cancer the samples containing atypical cells were more frequently frequently found when collected by cervical scraping. On the other hand, in endometrial aspiration smears, there was no correlation between the degree of differentiation of parent neoplasms and the frequency of the samples containing atypical cells. But endometrial aspiration smears revealed higher accuracy rate than cervical smears.
2. There was any correlation between the extent of myometrial infiltration of cancer and the frequency of samples containing atypical cells neither with cervical scraping nor with endometrial aspiration. This result was incompatible with the data reported hitherto, and further studies should be performed.
3. With the evident invasion of the cervix the frequency of the samples containing atypical cells by cervical scraping increased significantly.
4. Tumor diathesis was observed more frequently in endometrial aspiration samples than in cervical smears. Some of the samples collected by cervical scraping did not contain any atypical cells, while manifesting tumor diathesis.
5. Normal endometrial cells were relatively common in cellular specimens of postmenopausal patients collected by cervical scraping and atypical cells were not necessarily observed in some of the samples containing normal endometrial cells.
