In this study it is tried to clarify the relation between the changes in lifestyles and the housework space, according to the social progress during Meiji Period.<BR>Publications describing the ideas for housework space in architectural design were examined.<BR>It has been determined that 1) there were four main ideas to design and 2) these ideas follow a chronological order.<BR>These ideas are as follows : 1) 1868-1886, emphasis on a hygienic environment; 2) 1887-1896, effective use of resources; 3) 1897-1905, home improvement; 4) 1906-1912, consideration for the paths of travel.
