Lumican and fibromodulin belong to the family of small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycans (SLRPs). They are reported to stabilize fibrils and regulate fibrillogenesis. We investigated the expression of lumican and fibromodulin in the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint of rats.
The specimens were examined immunohistochemically using antibody against lumican and fibromodulin.
The localization of lumican and fibromodulin showed significant differences: lumican was localized in the synovial membrane and posterior disk attachment, while fibromodulin was expressed in the articular disc.
