Background: We report a case of pulmonary oncocytic carcinoid with a rare histology, referencing cytological, histological, and ultrastructural findings.
Case: A 62-year-old man with an abnormal nodular shadow on chest X-ray in screening was found in computed tomography to have a well-defined mass related to the right lower bronchus B10. Transbronchial aspiration cytology raised suspicions of a neoplastic tumor and biopsy showed histological findings of a carcinoid tumor. Stamp cytology and electron microscopic examination of the tumor of resected right lower lung were compatible with oncocytic carcinoid. Conclusion: A cytological feature of eosinophilic granular cyto-plasm should be suspected to show findings of oncocytic carcinoid, although it is not enough for a difinitive diagnosis of this neoplasm. Histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopical examinations are necessary for correct diagnosis of oncocytic carcinoid.
