Background: Fallopian tube carcinoma is difficult to find and fewer than 20 cases were reported as in situ lesions thus far. We report a case of in situ carcinoma of the fallopian tube detected by a positive endometrial smear.
Case: A 56-year-old Japanese woman reporting lower abdominal pain underwent gynecological cytological examination of the endometrium that proved to be positive. She then underwent endometrial curretage at our hospital but the specimens had no atypical epithelium. We examined endometrial cavity by hysteroscopy and conducted total curettage but found no abnormality. We followed up with repeated positive endometrial smears. We then conducted total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and partial omentectomy. Postoperative pathological examination revealed a minute in situ carcinoma on the right fimbria. Immunohistochemistry with anti-p 53 antibody showed diffuse, strongly positive epithelical nuclei. Washing cytology of the pelvis was positive.
Conclusion: We treated a case of in situ carcinoma of the fallopian tube indicated suspected by positive endometrial cytology.
