Objective: We compared the appearance of reactive mesothelial cells with histopathologic changes in the serosa to clarify the origins of reactive mesothelial cells of various configurations that appear in effusion.
Study Design: Cells and parietal peritoneum were collected 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after single administration of Carrageenan liquor into the peritoneal cavity of rats.
Results: Reactive mesothelial cells could be classified into 9 types. Almost all cells which appeared on day 1 were round type. Pair type, irregular type and binucleated type were most common on days 3 and 7. Spindle type, polygonal type, interstitium-like type and acinar type were most common on day 14. The addition, morula-like type appeared with similar frequency at 7 days after. The alterations to serosa began with inflammation which produced desquamation of mesothelial cells. This was followed by an exudation phase, and then led to build-up of granuloma and the degeneracy image with the other hand while producing regeneration of mesothelial cells.
Conclusion: Reactive mesothelial cells of various configurations appeared correspond to changes in the serosa.
