Normal-sized ovary carcinoma syndrome is a clinical situation, chracterized by diffuse metastatic disease of the peritoneal cavity, but in which the ovaries are of noraml size.
The patient was a 55-yera-old female. Her chief complaint was abdominal distension, we documented massive ascites by ultrasound, and recognized adenocarcinoma cells on cytologic examination of the ascites fluid. The cytoplasms of these cells were pale and vacuolated (PAS positive). Nuclear inclusions and large red nucleoli were prominent. We considered these cells to be indicative of adenocarcinoma.
Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of papillary and solid portions. Immunohistochemically, the tissue of this tumor stained positive with EMA, but negative with Vimentin and CA-125. On colloidal iron staining for acid mucosubstances, the intensity of tumor cell staining was not decreased. We thus concluded that this tumor was a serous surface papillary carcinoma (SSPC).
