We report a case of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the cervix (CCAC) unrelated to diethylstilbestrol exposure. The patient was a 47-year old female.
The patient had been diagnosed as having carcinoma in situ at another hospital, and was relerred to our hospital.
On cytologic examinations, two types of tumor cells were recognizable, i.e., "clear cell type" and "large naked nuclei type". "Clear cell type" tumor cells showed light richlylaced cytoplasma. On the other hand, "large naked nuclei type" cells were scattered around clusters of "clear cell type" cells. These cytologic findings of two distinct cell types allowed us to diagnose this case as CCAC.
CCAC is a very rare disease. However early diagnosis of this disease based on by cytologic screening is important because the prognosis of advanced CCAC is reportedly unfavorable.
