In this study, we compared 4 cases of malignant mesothelioma with 3 cases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma.
Cytological features with the Papanicolau stain, and staining characteristics with mucous-and immuno-histo-chemical stains were investigated.
Greater variety in cytological features was seen in adenocarcinomas than in mesotheliomas.
With mucous-histochemical stains, digestion by diastase of the periodic acid Sciff (PAS) was consistently positive in mesotheliomas, but was occasionally negative in adenocarcinomas. Mesotheliomas showed digestion by hyaluronidase, while adenocarcinomas did not.
With immuno-histochemical staining, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was strongly positive in adenocarcinomas, while weakly positive cells were observed in mesotheliomas. No differences were obserbed in keratin and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) positivity.
In addition, mucous-and immuno-histochemical stains were useful for distingushing between the two malignancies.
