We report our experience with 158 cases of immediate interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies using Diff-Quik-stained preparations. Immediate interpretations were made in 9.7% of all aspiration biopsy cases and the rate has gradually increased. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of tentative diagnoses at the aspiration sites were 98.1%, 94.6% and 95.7% respectively. These rapid interpretations have dramatically decreased the false negative rate, and this method seems useful in immediately reducing patient anxiety and improving aspiration techniques. Adequate staff, time to spare and high diagnostic ability are required to carry out the immediate interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies. We also describe the advantages and limitations of Diff-Quik staining.
