To elucidate the cytological characteristics of and to differentiate between intraductal papilloma (IDP) and papillotubular carcinoma (PTC), we investigated the aspiration cytological findings of 12 IDP cases and 55 PTC cases, who had already been given a histological diagnosis. The common feature of IDP, which was classified into 8 subtypes, was the presence of stromal connective tissue and elongated nuclei of epithelial cells.PTC had 9 subtypes, which showed papillary, comedo, lower papillary, papillo-tubular and cribriform features, etc., It was easy to differentiate the papillary and comedo types from IDP, because of marked cell-ular atypia. On the other hand, the half of cases with papillotubular and cribriform types had small malignant cells and lacked cellular atypia. However, the papillo-tubular type showed tubular formations without myoepithelial cells, and the cribriform type had regular arrangements of nuclei and cellular polarity, as compared with IDP.
