Endocervical smears using "Cytobrush" in one hundred cases of the unsatisfactory colposcopic findings were studied concerning cytologic diagnosis, presence of well preserved columnar cells, cellular aggregation and hemorrhage in the back ground in comparison with smears by cotton tipped applicator.
There were no cases which were interpreted as insufficient for degeneration or small amount of cells although cells were taken after acetic acid application. There were five cases which revealed negative cytology in usual scraping smears by cotton tipped applicator and dysplastic cells in "Cytobrush" smears. Well preserved columnar cells were observed in 29.8% of smears by cotton tipped applicator and in 93.4% of "Cytobrush" smears. Heavy cellular overlapping and hemorrhage were observed in 1.0% and 1.1% respectively.
In conclusion "Cytobrush" is a good cell sampler of the endocervix, especially in cases of the unsatisfactory colposcopic findings.
