301 patients with lung cancer confirmed histologically since 1972 were evaluated with respect to the correlation of cytology and histology.
The results obtained here were as follows;
1) Coincidence rates between histological diagnosis and clinical cytogiagnosis were 87.2% in adenocarcinoma, 88.2% in squamous cell carcinoma, 87.2% in small cell carcinoma and 46.4% in large cell carcinoma, respectively.
2) In 28 cases of large cell carcinoma identified histologically, diagnosis on cytology were done as poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, poorly differentiated squamaous cell carcinoma and other poorly differentiated carcinomas.
The cytomorphological findings with marked pleomorphism were noted in all cases.
3) Only seven cases out of 28 cases of large cell carcinoma showed pure large cell patterns on histology, while the other 21 cases had other diverse components mixed.
