A total of 14 breast cancers with malignant effusion were reviewed to analyze their prognosis in relation to some cytologic features. Survival period of 10 cases of them was less than 7 months since the detection of cancer cells in the effusion. Remaining four cases survived more than two years. The long term survivors were a 59.5 months survived case, a 50.5 months case, a 27 months case and a survivor at the time of 30 months. The cytology in effusions of four long term survivors were distinctive from the cytologic findings of other cancerous effusions, i. e., cancer cells were large in size accompanied by abundant cytoplasm, and tended to form significantly large clusters.
