Nipple discharge cytology was adopted as one of primary screening, aspiration cytology as secondary phase. Nipple discharge cytology was carried out on 9, 085 cases, 17.5% of total. Aspiration cytology was conducted on 288 cases, 0.6% of total. Detection of atypical cells, large clusters of duct cells and/or erythrocytes in smears of nipple discharges was noticed as abnormal findings. The abnormal findings were seen in smears of 283 cases (3.1%). One hundred and eleven breast cancer cases were detected by mass survey examination. Nipple discharge cytology of cancer cases were positive in 4 and negative in 8. The results of aspiration smears of malignant cases were positive in 16, not ruled out cancer in 7 and negative in 5.
