Colposcopy and cytological examination were undertaken on subjects prior to punch biopsy of the cervix and again two weeks later. Changes were noted and studied comparatively. Group 1 consisted of subjects in which abnormalities were revealed only by colposcopy; Group 2 consisted of subjects in which abnormalities were observed both by colposcopy and cytological examination, and in which histo-pathological findings revealed dysplasia or carcinoma.
Results: Changes revealed by colposcopic findings
Group 1: the punch biopsied area healed in two weeks; abnormal findings of the surrounding area tended to unclear.
Group 2: two types of findings were noted in the punch biopsied area. 1) The scar remained as true erosion; 2) the scar was covered with very thin white epithelium. Among the former type, the majority were cases in which biopsy was undertaken on the center of the abnormal colposcopic findings. Among the latter type, the majority were cases in which the punch biopsied area was contiguous with a normal transformation zone, and healing was observed to begin f rom the normal transformation zone. In Group 2, cases were observed in which abnormal colposcopic findings vanished due to biopsy.
Changes revealed by cytological examination
Group 1: few changes were observed between pre- and postpunch biopsy, and very few cases of repair cells were revealed.
Group 2: a decrease in the number of abnormal cells was frequently observed, while an increase in the number of better-differentiated cells among the types of abnormal cells was also frequently noted.
