The extended depression which began in 1973 has reduced the national standard of living. The consumer's purchasing power which had been rising during the rapid growth period prior to 1973 has since then steadily decreased. This depression has not only lowered the national dietary standard but has also changed the very structure of food consumption. The diet for most people has returned to the traditional type, that is to say, eating mostly rice and fish with a reduction of meat, dairy products and fruit. However, it is difficult to actually return to the traditional diet because of rising prices of rice and other foods. This is especially the case for low income groups. Therefore returning to the traditional diet seems to be a passing phenomenon. The outcome has been a widening gap in the total food budget of high and low income groups.
