(1) When rats were fed sucrose only or sucrose and fat in a separate container from other nutrients, the serum and liver triglyceride levels and the liver glycogen level were elevated compared with those of the controls fed all nutrients together. Activities of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehy-drogenase, malic enzyme and acetyl-CoA carboxylase were also elevated. In this case, it is suggested that the enzyme activities increased to the point of causing more lipogenesis than in the controls.<BR>(2) When rats were given starch only or starch and fat in a separate container from other nutrients, no elevations such as in (1) were observed except the elevation of liver thiglyceride level.
