The Distribution of <SUP>90</SUP>Sr in Rice and Several Portions of Rice Bran

Two species of rice, "Uruchi and Mochi" harvested in 1958 and 1959respectively, were analyzed for <SUP>90</SUP>Sr (μμc/kg, SrU=<SUP>90</SUP>Srμμc/g Ca). The brown rice was divided into white rice and 5 fractions of the rice bran in course of cleaning time. Rice straw and seed coat of these rice plant harvested in 1959 were also subjected to analysis.<BR>Results were as follows.<BR>1) In all fractions of the rice bran <SUP>90</SUP>Sr concentration, which decreased toward the inner fraction, were higher than that of white rice. This tendency was observed not to be changed, although the amounts of <SUP>90</SUP>Sr in these fractions of rice bran were influ-enced by environmental conditions such as <SUP>90</SUP>Sr conentration in the atmosphere and growingd status.<BR>2) <SUP>90</SUP>Sr was observed to be present in higher amounts in rice straw and seed coat than in the brown rice.<BR>3) When the brown rice was polished enough to be used for food, the <SUP>90</SUP>Sr in the white rice decreased. However, much attention and further study should be needed to decontaminate <SUP>90</SUP>Sr in rice bran and rice straw for using it as cattle feed.
