In this paper, the use of a systematic scheme for the optimization of capillary electrophoretic separations is investigated. The scheme is based on the overlapping mapping procedure, an interpretative optimization scheme, to predict the optimum conditions for the separation. The use of the procedure was demonstrated for selected groups of compounds, such as flavonoids and plant growth regulators. Procedures for the optimization of two parameters, such as pH and surfactant concentration, as well as for the optimization of three parameters, such as the compositions of three different modifiers in CE separation are presented. To validate the optimization procedure, additional experiments were performed using the electrophoretic conditions found in the optimum region, which gave satisfactory separation of all the peaks.
