Laparoscopic Colorectal Cancer Surgery in Three Patients with a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt

We report three cases of colorectal cancer with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, in whom laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, Hartmann's operation, and intersphincteric resection (ISR) were performed.<BR>All three cases were safely treated, with the pneumoperitoneum pressure set at 8 mmHg, without clamping or other manipulations of the shunt. There were no postoperative complications.<BR>Laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery for the ventriculoperitoneal shunt can be safely performed, and to our knowledge, there have been no reports of laparoscopic colectomy for ventriculoperitoneal shunt without any manipulations; our cases are the first in the world.<BR>To safely perform laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery for ventriculoperitoneal shunt, it is important to check that the ventriculoperitoneal shunt has a valve to prevent backflow and is working normally, to monitor the intracranial pressure, and to examine ventricular expansion by head CT (computed tomography) after the operation.
