Value of Free Fatty Acid in Rat Plasma when Maintained at Room Temperature

Values of free fatty acid (FFA) and triglyceride (TG) were monitored when the plasma samples, obtained from rats fed or fasted overnight, were maintained at room temperature or at 4° for up to 6hrs. The FFA increased as early as 1 hr later, and the magnitude of the increase became greater with time. In contrast, the TG decreased with time, though the change in TG was apparently less pronounced than that in FFA. Both the increase in FFA and decrease in TG were partially prevented when the samples were maintained at 4°. The increase in FFA was more prominent in the sample with high TG.
