This study was undertaken to evaluate long term biological changes and function of the implanted reinforced biosynthetic ovine collagen vascular prostheses. In the mongrel dogs, 14 Omniflow (OF) grafts (6mm internal diameter, 6-8cm in length) were used in aortic replacement (12 grafts) and aorto-iliac bypasses(2 grafts). Eleven grafts were patent during observation period. There was a less pannus ingrowth from the adjacent host arteries about 5mm into the graft across each anastomosis. On histopathological study, there was less inflammatory reactions with fewer cellular infiltration in the pengraft host tissue. These results indicated that this graft has an excellent histocompatibility even though the antithrombogenicity was less satisfactory. Clinically, 24 femoro-popliteal bypasses above the knee (FPAK) were performed. The primary cumulative patency rate at 1 year was 94.7%, and none of the grafts showed aneurysmal dilatation. We conclude that OF may be useful materials for FPAK bypasses under high graft flow condition.
