The Effectiveness of Statin to Delay Processing of Becoming Persistent AF after Restoration to Sinus Rhythm by Cardioversion

Backgrounds and Purposes: There are some studies which statin have offered rhythm-control advantage for the patients with restoration of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) to sinus rhythm (SR) by cardioversion (CV). But the effects remain controversial. This study examined the factors, including statin, that influence maintenance of SR after restoration of persistent AF by CV. Methods: We retrospectively studied the clinical characteristics in the 117 patients with persistent AF who were restored to SR by CV. The recurrence of persistent AF had been followed up as out patient (mean follow up duration 1648±1096 days). Results: AF recurred in 64 patients at 866±920 days. Analyzed from the point of taking statin or not, the recurrence rate was significantly lower in the patients taking statin. The effects could not be shown statintically in Kaplan-Meier curve by log-rank test. But, with the cox proportional model, only taking statin was significant predictor of recurrence (HR 0.39 (0.1–0.96, p<0.05)). There was no significant difference in other factors studied. Conclusions: The continuous administration of statin may be highly effective in delaying the process of advancing to persistent AF after restoration to SR by CV.
