Measurements of differential cross sections in the vicinity of the rainbow scattering angle for the system of argon ions on argon atoms were carried out using a crossed beam apparatus at energies from 10 to 50eV. Oscillatory structures resulting from the interference between gerade and ungerade states of a pseudo-molecular ion Ar2+ were observed in the differential cross section superimposed on the rainbow patterns due to the elastic scattering. Experimental results were compared with classical calculations, and the depth of the intermolecular potential was estimated from the angular position of the rainbow peak to be—1.3eV assuming the 12-6-4 potential. Results were consistent with the JWKB calculations of Lorents, Olson and Conklin with the use of potential parameters obtained from ab initio calculations of Gilbert and Wahl.
