The purpose of this study is to investigate papers covered in the MEDLINE and books covered by NACSIS/LCMB in the field of medical informatics. The following results were ascertained: 1) In 1987, a new category termed "Medical Informatics" was entered into MeSH's "L category". The number of papers has since increased. 2) Five journals in the field of Medical informatics were newly indexed in the MEDLINE, during the period from 1981 to 1993. 3) The number of papers in the medical informatics system has increased markedly and this trend is expected to continue. The volume of papers on information science has also increased.
