Collection development in medical libraries from the viewpoint of the acquisition librarian has two sides. One is the planned and constant purchase of new resources for the ever expanding fields of medical science for the sake of researchers and advanced users of the library. The other is "Gakushu Shitei Tosho" or a selected assigned booklist for medical students and residents. It is not easy to routinize book selection systems, but we succeeded by setting criteria in the form of a list driven by practical necessity, and named it "Gakushu Shitei Tosho." This has been used efficiently for the past fifteen years. The first list was published and distributed to the related, and the latest or 5th ed. was published in 1993. In this report we review how the library selects books with the help of faculty members who are responsible for the selection of books for each subject in the curriculum. In addition, maintenance of the system by library staff is described.
