Difference of Inhaled .BETA.2-agonist Effect in Respiratory Resistance between Asthmatic Children and Children with Chronic Cough.

To evaluate the effect of inhaled β2-agollist agaillst bronchoconstriction in asthmatic children, we studied β2-agonist-induced improvement in respiratory resistance (Rrs) during methacholine inhalation challenge in both asthmatic children and children with chronic cough using a continuous inhalation provocation method. Two hundred and seventy-four atopic children with asthma and 28 patients with chronic cough were subjected. Inhalation challenge was performed by Astograph. We calculated the linear slope of Rrs decreased after inhalation β2-agonist (r-St), which was considered to represent the effect with inhaled β2-agonist. In children with asthma, r-St was correlated with St, although other parameters were not correlated with r-St. r-St in asthmatics was lower than that in non-asthmatics. Thus, the effect of inhaled β2-agonist is related to bronchiaI reactivity, and the response to inhaled β2-agonistin asthmatics was greater than that in asthmatics. These data sugeest that each patient may sarne reactivity of bronchial smoothr muscle to inhaled methacholille and β2-agonist, and bronchoconstriction in asthmatics may be dependent on more complex mechanisms than that children with chronic cough.
