The fifth overtone frequencies of the aryl C–H vibration of C6H5CH3−<I>n</I>Cl<I>n</I> were observed by means of the thermal-lens technique. The shifts of their vibrational frequencies from that of benzene were found to be proportional to the inductive contribution of the Hammett σ, thus supplying information on the reactivity of the chemical bond.
