A simple interferometer of Michelson configuration has been successfully used for the observation of transient cooling and heating of CO_2 and mixtures of CO_2-N_2 or CO_2-He induced by 10.6 μm infrared laser pulses. Vibration-Translation (V-T) relaxation times at 1 atm for cooling, which correspond to the rise times of the signals, were 1.2 μsec, 1.9 μsec and 0.5 μsec respectively in pure CO_2, mixtures of CO_2-N_2 (1:1) and CO_2-He (1:1). Larger V-T relaxation times of 10.4 μsec, 20.1 μsec and 9.1 μsec were obtained for heating those gases at 1 atm. The calculated V-T relaxation times are in fairly good agreement with the observed ones.
