Oxidation of diphenylamine with molecular oxygen in the presence of CuCl in pyridine at room temperature to give tetraphenylhydrazine in a high yield was achieved by selecting suitable reaction conditions. <I>N</I>-methylaniline was also oxidized to give <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-dimethyl-<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-diphenylhydrazine.
