The reactions of <I>N</I>-alkyl- and <I>N</I>-aryl-2-(methylsulfinyl)benzamides and <I>N</I>-[2-(methylthio)benzoyl]-<I>N</I>-alkylhydroxylamines with thionyl chloride have been found to give 2-substituted 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2<I>H</I>)-ones in nearly quantitative yields. The reactions of <I>N</I>-[2-(methylthio)benzoyl]-<I>N</I>-arylhydroxylamines with thionyl chloride gave chlorinated anilides as the major products.
