• Four mono(arylhydrazone)s of benzocyclobutene-1,2-dione (BBD) have been prepared in which the aryl group is 2,4-dinitrophenyl, 4-bromophenyl, phenyl, and 4-nitrophenyl. The first three have been separated into their <I>E</I>- and <I>Z</I>-isomers whose configurations are assigned on the basis of spectra and <I>R</I><SUB>f</SUB> values. Improvements in the preparation of BBD from 1,2-dibromo-1,2-dihydrobenzocyclobutene are described.
