Irradiation of S-butyl (Z)-3-methoxy-2-butenethioate (1Z) gave the 1,5-methyl migration product 2 and the O-demethylation product 3. The photo-1,5-methyl migration occured competitively with the O-demethylation from the π, π* excited triplet state of 1Z. The migration product 2 underwent the secondary photoreaction to 3 in a nondegassed benzene solution.
