Upon MCPBA-oxidation, several 8<I>H</I>-cyclohepta[<I>b</I>]thiophen-8-ones yielded the 8<I>H</I>-cyclohepta[<I>b</I>]thiophen-8-one 1,1-dioxides and their epoxides. The latters were shown to be convertible to several ring-contracted derivatives, the benzo[<I>b</I>]thiophene 1,1-dioxides and/or their corresponding phenol and salicylaldehyde derivatives.
