Viologen linked water-soluble porphyrins (ZnP(C<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>V)<SUB>4</SUB>) with different methylene chain lengths (<I>n</I>=2–5) between porphyrin and viologen were synthesized. These compounds were applied to photoinduced hydrogen evolution in a system containing NADPH–ZnP(C<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>V)<SUB>4</SUB>–hydrogenase under steady state irradiation.
