The mesomorphic behavior of fifteen bis(4-alkoxycarbonylphenyl)terephthalates has been examined in order to study the effects of branching of the ester alkyl groups. The 2-methylation of purely smectogenic butyl, pentyl, and hexyl esters gives rise to the appearance of nematic properties.
