The copolymerization of alkylene glycol nitrate acrylates (ANA) and methacrylates (ANMA) [M2] with styrene [M1] has been carried out at 60°C. The alkylene glycol mononitrates used were ethylene, propylene, and butylene glycol mononitrates, abbreviated as EGN, PGN, and BGN respectively. For their acrylates and methacrylates, the following abridged notations are used: ENA and ENMA, PNA and PNMA, and BNA and BNMA respectively. The monomer reactivity ratios, <I>r</I>1 and <I>r</I>2, and the Alfrey-Price <I>Q</I>2 and <I>e</I>2 values for ANA and ANMA were evaluated as follows: <I>r</I>1=0.48, <I>r</I>2=0.08, <I>Q</I>2=0.49, and <I>e</I>2=1.00 for ENA; <I>r</I>1=0.41, <I>r</I>2=0.20,<I>Q</I>2=0.69, and <I>e</I>2=0.78 for BNA; <I>r</I>1=0.35, <I>r</I>2=0.49, <I>Q</I>2=0.99, and <I>e</I>2=0.53 for ENMA; <I>r</I>1=0.36, <I>r</I>2=0.50, <I>Q</I>2=0.98, and <I>e</I>2=0.51 for PNMA and <I>r</I>1=0.37, <I>r</I>2=0.40, <I>Q</I>2=0.90, and <I>e</I>2=0.58 for BNMA. The polar and steric effects of the ester side chain containing the nitrate group were discussed. ANA was copolymerized with some other divinyl monomers, and the resulting crosslinked copolymer were subjected to the swelling test.
