Total Syntheses of Carbohydrates. III. DL-Glyceraldehyde and 2-Deoxy-DL-<I>erythro</I>-pentose

The synthesis of DL-glyceraldehyde (III) by the Barton's oxidation of DL-isopropylideneglycerol (I) was described. 2-Deoxy-DL-<I>erythro</I>-pentose (IX) (2-deoxy-DL-ribose) has been synthesized by the Barton's oxidation of 2-deoxy-3,4-<I>O</I>-isopropylidene-5-<I>O</I>-(tetrahydro-2-pyranyl)-DL-<I>erythro</I>-pentitol (VIII) and by the hydroboration of DL-<I>erythro</I>-4-pentyn-1,2,3-triol (XI) followed by hydrogen peroxide oxidation. The latter method gave crystalline 2-deoxy-DL-<I>erythro</I>-pentose (IX) in a reasonable yield.
