• The Fries rearrangement of 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-acetoxy-2,3-dimethylbenzofurans was studied and the <I>o</I>-hydroxy-ketones obtained were converted to dimethylfuro derivatives of 4<I>H</I>-chromen-4-one-2-carboxylic acid.
